AI-Capex Book-to-Bill Monitor

Orders are a leading indicator. The book-to-bill ratio leads revenue; the higher the ratio, the longer the revenue lead-time. A high ratio puts greater reliance on working capital to fund the activity that generates those future billings, making credit availability the key force behind cancellations and a market reassessment of future billings. As of 2026-09-30.

Analyst Note
Book-to-bill's level still screams expansion, with the hard-reported aggregate near 2.5x and Powell booking three times its quarterly revenue, but the second derivative is where the cohort has started to split: ten names show order momentum higher than their prior print, seven lower, and two do not say. The lower group now reaches the borrowers: Oracle added $26 billion of backlog in the quarter against $85 billion the quarter before, CoreWeave about $5 billion against about $33 billion and Nebius a similar slowdown, while Argan's backlog is down $411 million since January and Vertiv has not printed an orders figure since its peak Q4 2025 report even as customer prepayments doubled. The cleanest forward gauge still sits one layer down the chain: Micron holds $32 billion of customer commitments and $12.7 billion of deposits, and new deposits are still arriving fast ($12.3 billion in the quarter against about $0.4 billion in the one before), but the flow, not the balance, is what will say first when buyers start pricing to spot. The other side of the same ledger sits with the buyers: the five largest hyperscaler and cloud buyers now carry about $1.1 trillion of signed building leases whose rent has not started, up about 36% in a quarter, plus several hundred billion of noncancelable purchase commitments and guarantees that would come due if a financing partner fails, so the seller backlog above is only as good as the buyer's willingness and ability to keep adding to that pile.

The buyer side: what the hyperscalers have signed

The mirror image of the backlog above: one company's backlog is its customer's obligation. These are commitments signed but not yet delivered, taken from the quarterly filing footnotes. Leases not yet commenced are signed building leases whose rent has not started, so US accounting does not yet put them on the balance sheet. Purchase commitments are noncancelable contracts to buy chips, power, cloud capacity and equipment; they are obligations to pay, not borrowing. Guarantees are promises to cover a third party's loss or loan if it fails (a residual value guarantee covers a landlord's loss if a building is worth less than expected); they are contingent, so they are not added to the other two. $1,118B of leases not yet commenced across these five, +36% (+$297B) on the prior quarter. Direction is the signal: the quarterly addition shrinking would be the first sign the buyers are slowing.
